Guatemala with Kids: Where to Stay in Antigua

There are some beautiful hotels in Antigua, most housed within charming colonial buildings and many family-friendly. We tried and tested the following hotels in Antigua.

Located in a beautiful restored colonial building, El Convento is just the kind of boutique hotel that we love; a grown-up hotel that welcomes kids. We stayed here for several nights and one of the kids’ highlights were the little treats left on their beds each night such as macaroons or M&Ms. There are seven rooms in total, two of which are interconnecting. All rooms can accommodate two children (in a built-in bed and a ‘camp bed’). The three-room Suite can accommodate six people, great for large families. The beds are large with crisp linen, heavy pillows and all rooms open onto a shared sit-out veranda with hammocks and chairs.

Posada de Don Rodrigo, Antigua

After staying in their sister property in Lake Atitlan which we rated as ‘average’, we didn’t have particularly high expectations for their property in Antigua. As it was, we found it an excellent mid-range option and would definitely stay here again. Posada de Don Rodrigo is well located in the centre of town and, conveniently for kids, right next door to the Choco Museo! The property wraps itself around three pretty inner courtyards, which are a magnet for children. When we stayed there were several families and all the kids would congregate in these spaces to play. Our bathroom also came with an enormous bath, which we took full advantage of after our dusty horse ride up Pacaya volcano. Although the restaurant looked very good, there are so many excellent options to choose from in town that we didn’t get a chance to eat here.

Casa Santo Domingo

We didn’t stay at Casa Santo Domingo but we did enjoy a fantastic Christmas dinner here! Casa Santo Domingo is widely considered to be Antigua’s most luxury hotel and our friend Andrea over at Wanderlust Living has an excellent post about just how amazing this hotel is!
